a deadly fire engulfs a brazilian nightclub. the death toll is climbing into the hundreds. we have the latest on this developing story. >> plus, the gun control debate taking center stage in washington this week as lawmakers battle over the next step in curbing violence. >> a live look outside tonight. milder temperatures and the sun peeking through today. but we are tracking big changes in the weather for tomorrow. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm laura evans.

maw maw is off we are following a developing story out of brazil. a nightclub fire has left more than 200 people dead and dozens more injured. it broke out around 2:00 this morning at a club called kiss. lauren demarco joins us with >> the latest update on the death toll, 233 people killed. 117 people were reportedly treated for smoke inhalation and burns. it happened in santa maria. there were more than a thousand people in the nightclub at the time and officials say there was a stampede for the exit, which became partially blocked by those already dead. >> reporter: as flames raced through the crowded club in brazil, panicked patronned scrambled to make their way outside. [sirens] >> reporter: with more than 230 people killed, it appears to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade. witnesses say the band on stage

performing was using flares which sparked the flames. video shows men joining firefighters, using axes to break through windows and walls to help free those trapped. according to doctors, most of those killed were suffocated by the smoke. at least 50 bodies were found in a bathroom. the victims confused a rest room door with an exit door. we spoke with prince george's county fire chief who says this should serve as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in a crowd. >> everybody is going to turn around and go out the same door they came in, because that's all they know. if they look for the secondary exits they'll have an idea, everybody else is going that way, i know i can go this way. if you didn't look in the beginning, you'll never know. >> reporter: he says it highlights it's importance of exit signs in the u.s. if you don't feel safe in a venue, go with your gut and better yet, report it. >> look for that capacity certificate. if you know it's only supposed to have 200 people and it's

clearly over that, you have options. one, i suggest you should say something. but if you just don't feel like you can say something right then, you should leave for your own safety. when you get into those overcrowded situations and fear kicks in, that's when people die. >> a security guard at the club has been quoted as saying it was at its maximum capacity between 1,000 and 2,000 people. we're learning one of the band members is among the dead. brazil's president arrived to visit the injured today after cutting short her trip to a summit and said, "it is a tragedy for all of us." laura? >> tragic story. lauren demarco, thank you. here at home, still a little chilly outside. but pretty good day for people to get their car washed, get that salt and buildup off their cars and men people had that idea at mr. wash here in northwest d.c. however, did that washing of the car jinx us? gary mcgrady in the weather

center. what's the morning commute looking like and did it jinx us? >> there was a reason why i didn't get my car washed. i didn't want to spend the money, because i knew we would get more rain and stuff tomorrow and followed up wednesday. if you did, i understand to clear off that salt. listen, let me show you first of all the winter weather advisories in place. this is not going be a big, big deal. i don't see any indication we'll get a big accumulation of ice from this sleet or freezing rain. all the numbers are pointing towards the fact that the precip will be super light out there. maybe only up to 0.10 inches some of that in the form of rain. this side of the bay and mountains squeezed into this advisory until noon or so. cold air trapped at the

surface. warm air is coming over the surface aloft creating a bit of a mess tomorrow morning. to the west mostly rain. the thin band of pink, that's it changing over to sleet and freezing rain and farther to the north it's snow. it's pretty much the picture for us tomorrow. mostly this is going to be a messy neck early, early tomorrow morning, and again i tell you surface temperatures will start off below freezing. we'll have sleet. we're going to have freezing rain that will begin overnight. probably 3:00, 4:00 in the morning. definitely before the morning commute. it's going to be changing over by afternoon to all rain, and we're just expecting just a minor amount of potential ice accumulation, mainly to the north of the district and back out to the west as well. we'll come in and show you the full numbers for tomorrow. laura, we're still expecting a nice little warmup middle part of this week. >> we will look forward to

that. gary mcgrady, thanks. >> you bet. a follow-up now on the shooting at a northeastd.c. nightclub. it happened overnight friday into saturday. police are searching for a suspect in that shooting that left one woman and four men injured around 2:30 in the morning. the suspect opened the front door of the d.c. sound stage and fired shots into the crowd. we went back to the club today and found out they'll be closed while police investigate. police in camp springs, maryland are investigating a robbery there. it happened this afternoon at the 7-eleven. several cops were at the scene. no word on arrests at this time. a memorial service today for two people killed in a fire in falls church. everyone in attendance wore pink and yellow to honor the mother and daughter who passed away early friday morning. laura was a faculty member at gallaudet university and the daughter was a junior at the

as vice president joe biden continues his mission for stricter gun control laws, the ceo of the national rifle association is expected to testify next week. peter doocy has more. >> reporter: more than 157 kinds of military style assault weapons would be banned by legislation introduced by democratic senator dianne feinstein and she thinks most americans are behind her. >> sandy hook, i think, really destroys all of the kind of tales that it's nra is trying to weave about young people and guns. >> reporter: president obama

revealed in an interview with the new republic, he takes guests skeet shooting all the time and "i have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this condition for generations and i think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake." we heard from congressman paul ryan this morning. >> let's go beyond this debate and get deeper. what's our policy on mental illness? what's going on in our culture that produces this kind of thing? and i hope we don't skip past that and bring out political ideas that recycle failed policies of the past. >> reporter: ryan's republican colleagues, congresswoman marsha backburn says -- >> doing a so-called assault weapons ban is going after a symptom and as teachers have said to me, don't focus on whatever is the weapon. get to the root cause. >> reporter: senator feinstein said she doesn't expect a vote

on her proposed legislation for a while. in washington, peter doocy, fox news. the president's stance on tougher gun laws is leading to a boost in sales. at a gun show this weekend in california, some waiting for hours to buy guns or ammunition. people there say events like this demonstrate how concerned americans are over losing their second amendment rights. >> you look at these lines today, this is a prime example of people who are angry and worried. >> estimated 18,000 people attended this event. the ceo of the national rifle association is scheduled to testify next week as we said before the senate judiciary committee on gun control. concerns remain as illinois is set to become the fourth state to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. some say the measure doesn't

have enough safe guards to avoid identity fraud and those in favor say it's a public safety measure. governor quinn is expected to sign the measure today. washington, utah and new mexico are the three other states that allow licenses for illegal immigrants. immigration will be among the big issues president obama will face in his second term. the debt is another. while republicans confront the future of the once grand old party. the sunday talk shows threw all of that, plus women in combat up for debate this morning. and melanie alnwick has your political roundup. >> reporter: after this week's big announcement removing the ban on women serving in combat, fox news sunday brought in the nation's first female combat pilot. she says when it comes to battle readiness, all service members should be judged equally. >> the bottom line is we need to treat people like individuals. what are the capabilities they bring to the fight, which includes physical strength,

plus courage, plus aptitude, plus leadership and all the other things we need to have the most effective fighting force. >> reporter: as the new mols is implemented -- policy is implemented, some warn of pitfalls. >> where does this go? draft women, release them from the service for pregnancy? where does it ultimately go? they're in combat and they should be in combat and we should find opportunities for them to serve in combat. i'm talking about infantry, armor, special forces, those kinds of units are i object. >> reporter: republicans spent the weekend trying to figure out how to rebrand the grand old party. >> we are the great opportunity party. we're the growth and opportunity party. we are the government of the people party. we are the party that stands for free markets, family freedom, hope and tune for each and every person in this country, and that is a great message. and that is what our focus

ought to be. >> reporter: there will be several skirmishes where the republicans can try out their focus, debt ceiling, and automatic spending cuts set to kick in august 1. but don't count on up compromise. >> we think the sequesters will happen. >> reporter: congressman paul ryan says he's not encouraged by president obama's words so far. >> i decided to not comment between the election and inauguration because i wanted to see what kind of president we're looking at, what kind of path he was putting his administration on. and all of the statements and all the comments lead me to believe he's thinking more of a political conquest than compromise. >> reporter: democrats have been talking the hard line on revenues and gun control. yet on immigration, there seems to be at least a small agreement. >> we are trying to work our way through some very difficult

issues. but we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country have an immigration law that we can live with. >> it's my hope we'll come up with a bipartisan solution. i do think enforcement has to be a big part of it. but again, i like many of the principles that marco rubio has been laying out. i think he's a member of this group, and i look forward to seeing what they produce. >> reporter: and that's as good as a place as any to start. melanie alnwick, fox 5 news. a secret service dog fell to its death saturday night. the k-9 officer was doing a sweep of a parking area in new orleans. the agency began its training program in 1975 to detect explosives. each dog and handler completes 20 weeks of training before beginning work. holocaust survivors are gathering in poland today to commemorate 68 years since the soviet liberation of the death

camps. politicians and dignitaries joined survivors to pay their respects. groups laying down wreaths and flowers. many of the survivors attending were either born in the camp or sent there as children. between one and 1.5 million people died at the camps during world war ii. coming up tonight, a new racy tourist ad showcasing d.c. and turning some heads. but is it a little too much? we're going to take a look. day.

this week metro released a sweeping plan for the future of transit here in our region. among the most expensive items, new underground rail lines through downtown d.c. and georgetown. john henrehan has that story. >> reporter: metro's problem in a nutshell is its popularity. a regional rail system carries about 750,000 a over the next 25 years, that's expected to grow to more than a million riders a day. even with all eight car trains during rush hours, the central core capacity of the system will become constantly jammed. >> where there is no longer capacity in the system, whether it's east-west, north-south, you have to split the system apart and provide additional tracks. >> reporter: the general manager outlined for the board that oversees the system a plan

that calls for consideration of new underground metro tunnels in d.c. between tenth street northwest and beneath m street northwest. those underground lines with new tracks would include a new tunnel under the potomac river into rossland. 100 years ago trolleys ran here and you can see the remnants of the tracks. they went away in the 1950s. commuter leaders in georgetown of cool to the idea of a metro stop when the system was being designed in the 1960s. attitudes may have changed. >> a metro rail station in georgetown? >> yeah. that would be good help for the business and the community as well. >> i would like it. >> why? >> it's hard to park at many

places and getting a metro would take us to the national gallery, smithsonians, many of the places we go. >> reporter: dr. silver man's husband expressed concern over what would be years of torn up streets in the traditional trench format is used for constructing the proposed new underground rail lines. there are many, many other recommendations in this report, including extending rail to maryland and to centreville and potomac mills in virginia. we'll have a link on our web site so you can take a look at this report on metro's possible future. our web site is myfoxdc.com. john henrehan, fox 5 news. let's take a look at the weather now, gary. what an improvement today over the last several. >> like balmy, wasn't it?

air and becomes rain, light rain through the afternoon hours. winter weather advisory for everybody here, certainly to the west of the bay, and to the east of the mountains. that includes the entire metro. this is not going to be an ice storm, okay? we may have a little bit of an accumulation farther to the north and west of the metro. i don't another see this is going to be a problem on the roads or not going to be enough ice accumulation to be a problem with the power lines or anything like that that, okay? use common sense and be smart. if you go out and things are slippery, keep it slow. make sure you got good traction out there. here's the setup now. we've been sunny today. temperatures responded, up into the mid- to upper 30s. but the clouds are beginning to come across. mostly cloudy to cloudy later on. here is what is coming our way. all of this, it looks pretty impressive. all indications are that by the time it gets here, it will be

following a big story tonight, the deadly overnight fire in brazil. it's being called the deadly never nightclub fire in the world in more than a decade. more than 200 people are dead. anna kooiman has more. >> reporter: a nightclub tragedy, where a fire and panic

leave hundreds dead. male party goers joining firefighters wielding axes and sledge hammers in an team to free those trapped inside. rescue crews counting more than 200 people among the dead. dozens more hospitalized. witnesses saying a flare or fire work that by a band member may have set off the fire. most of the victims died from smokes hillation after the roof caught fire sunday morning. more than a thousand people were inside. some people were crushed as panicked patrons rushed for the only exit. firefighters and civilians pulling people from the smoking building. survivors carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. the united states saw a similar tragedy in february, 2003 in rhode island during a slow, when 100 people died after sound proofing foam caught fire during a pyrotechnics display. in brazil, hundreds mourning,

as families tasked with identifying loved ones brought to a gym to survey the bodies. emotional president trying to soothe her country. >>(translator): in these times of sadness, we are together. and out of necessity we will heal. but we'll do so remembering our sadness. >> reporter: brazil's fire now being called the deadly nest nightclub fire the world has seen in more than a decade. the mayor there declaring a 30- day mourning period. brazilians on twitter calling this sad sunday. a mother vacationing and disappeared. sarai sierra traveled alone after a friend backed out of the trip. she was supposed to return home january 22nd but never made it. she left her passport, clothing and the phone in her room. >> you know, you have so many thoughts going through your mind. you don't know what to think, you don't know what to believe,

you don't know what to expect, you don't know what's going to come out of this. >> her husband plans to travel to turkey with her brother to meet with authorities. casey anthony has filed for bankruptcy. the mother who was acquitted of killing her daughter in 2011, listed her debts to include $500,000 in court fees and costs for her defense lawyer during her murder trial. a scare at the new york port authority last night, after reports of smoke at the bus terminal. 60 firefighters and a dozen units responded. it was evacuated for safety precautions. no one was hurt. officials are still investigating. dallas, texas man alive thanks to the help of two joggers who saw him crash his suv into a lake on friday morning. he is now out of the hospital with no memory of what happened. but he is wanting to thank those who saved his life. james rose has the details:

>> on my wa to work, and next thing i know i'm in the ambulance. >> reporter: jason does not remember running into the road and into the lake early friday morning. his suv sank to the bottom and left him trapped inside. two joggers that saw him go in tried to get him out, but couldn't. they said he was panicking and trying to get out, as the inside of the car filled with water. police officers arrived, two jumped in and pulled him from the sun roof of the suv unconscious. they dragged him to the shore and another officer gave him cpr until he started breathing. effectively saving his life. >> and i guess that's a good thing i don't remember it. >> reporter: but he has seen the news clips of what happened. >> it's very surreal to watch, yeah. >> reporter: what goes through your mind to know that people you don't know saw you go in the water and said, we got to do something? >> i couldn't be more grateful to those people. i'd like to say thank you to

the lovely couple and all the police that were involved. for sure. and i hope to thank them in person one day. >> reporter: jason's sister and mother saw the initial news reports about the crash, but had no idea it was him until later. >> we were in the icu and we saw the news, and the man and woman, the joggers were explaining the story and we were just in tears. we couldn't believe two strangers were willing to help my brother, our son, so it's just a truly amazing story of human kindness, so we're lucky. he's a miracle. >> reporter: doctors told jason he had a mild seizure and his immediate goal now is to get much needed rest. >> what hurts now? >> everything. >> reporter: head, chest? >> literally, everything. that was james rose reporting. next, if you're a parent, aunt or uncle, you know how kids are with their toys.

powder. >> trim all the access. >> gas cap on it. put it into a box. the box is automatically weighed and moves on to this conveyor and to our distribution center. >> reporter: what does it mean to make a product made in america? >> i love it. there's not a lot out there that is made in america. i'm very proud. >> they're in yard sales. they last forever. people like to buy u.s.a. stuff. >> reporter: it wasn't always this way. 20 years ago, the company made america's best selling swing in another country. >> we transferred it to china in the '90s. and about four or five years ago, we looked at the total cost of doing business and said, you know what, america has the highest productivity, we have the lowest raw material cost in the world, and we have the lowest energy cost in the world. let's look at how we could make this product back here in america. >> reporter: and today, the swing once again is made in the u.s.a. yet a few years ago, when the

economy tanked, little tikes considered moving manufacturing elsewhere. but ultimately, they decided to stay, receiving close to $4 million in tax incentives from the government. >> we certainly appreciate the support of the state and the federal government. but honestly, it's not enough to make a difference. it's about the people, it's about the productivity, the longevity. >> everything little tikes does imlates what parents do in the real world. >> reporter: it's why moms are a big part of the research. they're getting suggestions today. >> easy to get in by themselves. they can get in it and walk along. >> i like the floor boards. >> i think toddlers are drawn to the cartoony look it has. the colors are the iconic thing. >> bye-bye.

temperatures will warm up above freezing. sleet and freezing rain begins overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning. certainly will become all rain by afternoon. it won't be heavy. real, real light. places where there's a little bit of ice, only minor accumulations. should be less than 0.10-inch at best, and i don't anticipate big problems on the road. be careful tomorrow morning. bridges and overpasses in some places could become slippery, even though they're treated and we have the salt and chemicals left over from the last snow event. anyway, be wise and be careful tomorrow morning when you're out and about. 28 gaithersburg now. host of the temperature -- most of the temperatures around freezing. 29 pittsburgh. overnight tonight colder air

will drain in here, and it will set the stage for what happens early, early tomorrow morning. let me show you cincinnati is 39. st. louis is 45. look at the mild temperatures down south. by the time we get to tuesday, this stuff is coming up in our direction. we'll be well up into the 50s. tomorrow, we'll have that wedge of cold air that kind of gets in here and it's tough to erode that cold air out. probably will be noon, 1:00, 2:00, something like that before everybody goes above freezing. a few clouds coming across now. there's the precip package back out to the west of us. rain and warmer air. see this orange here, that's the transition into the messy mix and snow in the coldest of the air. once this comes across into the cold air tomorrow morning, we begin to get the mix. this is our future cast here. 3:00a.m. still dry. we bring this to 7:00 a.m. here comes the messy mix here. little bit of snow up north. could start off with a little bit of snow. it's very, very light, too. we don't get much.
